Gamma chapter has had quite a history with brothers in the public sector.
Justice Joseph Longo, '32, has a wikipedia page here, and served as Justice on the Connecticut state supreme court.
Dr. John Satti, a politician and physician, served as the Secretary of State of Connecticut from 1935 to 1939.
Discrimination Against Italian Americans: In the early 1900's, not every hospital performed surgical procedures on Catholics and Jews. Apparently, the New Haven Hospital also had a particular discrimination against Italian Catholics. Dr. Verdi could not perform surgery at the hospital so he did it in patients’ homes!
Around 1907, Dr. William F. Verdi founded the Hospital of St. Raphael (HSR). The hospital quickly grew to almost the size of New Haven Hospital by 1921.
See this very informative article here, a short excerpt from page 21:
The Hospital of St. Raphael (HSR) had its origin in New Haven in 1907 largely through the leadership of Dr. William F. Verdi (a graduate of Yale Medical School in 1894, an assistant in obstetrics, gynecology and surgery from 1896 to 1906). According to a note on page 16 of the published history of HSR at 100 years (cited above), “unfortunately, as an Italian-American and a Catholic, Verdi was not accepted at New Haven’s existing hospitals, particularly New Haven Hospital. Anti-Catholic discrimination was not just common, but rabid at the time.
In addition, Dr. Verdi was also the Surgeon General for Gov Baldwin of CT. For more information about this brothers impressive career, click here.
Judge Philip R Pastore, Gamma ’19, retired from the court at age 97 and died at 101.

On the Board of Syracuse: Where Alpha Phi Delta was born out of discrimination, one of our own, Benjamin William Avalone, Gamma '26, went on to serve on the Board of Governors at Syracuse!
Carlo Nisita, Gamma '25, was a noted Italian American painter, printmaker, muralist, and educator. A complete history of his accomplishements can be seen here.
