History of Beta Sigma
Below is a 50 year history of Beta Sigma put together by Ron Sme, '64, for their anniversary celebration in 2011.
Beta Sigma revitalized the NY District in 1973
The early 70's was not a strong period for APD in the New York (back then, the 3rd) District. Beta Sigma, Saint Francis College, was strong, but that was about it. Beta Pi (St John's) was primarily a local chapter with a strained relationship with the national fraternity and Theta Beta was barely hanging on with 3 brothers and no prospects. So in the fall of 1973, Beta Sigma ran an historic pledge period consisting of pledges from 4 schools. Two pledges from Theta Beta, NYU (Neil Anastasio and Charlie Fiore), two from Beta Eta, Brooklyn College (Charlie Ragusa and Al Parisi), two from Delta, Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute (Pete Sparaco and Mike Sheehan) and one from Beta Sigma (John Kaplon). The result was the reactivation of 3 chapters which played a key role in APD for many years. Thanks to Joe Caldarella who brought in his 4 friends to pledge Theta Beta and Beta Eta, and Tony Siconolfi who brought in the 2 Delta pledges, NY became a tight knit, cohesive and extremely active district going forward to this day.
